When "SOS" is NOT a Distress Signal!

"SOS" can be a call for help but at the Oklahoma City Philharmonic it is a reason for celebration! The "Society of Strings" is a string orchestra for adults who are still in the beginning stages of learning how to play their instruments. Forty members strong, the group is under the direction of Philharmonic cellist Dorothy Hays and they present their debut performance on Sunday, April 27 at 3pm at Edmond North High School.

In 2006, the Philharmonic launched a beginner adult string program and the response was overwhelming. "We had a few requests from people who took our "Meet the Orchestra" intro course," says Eddie Walker, executive director. "They wanted to learn to play violin. Dorothy put the course together and it really took off! She is a wonderful teacher."

The Society of Strings includes "graduates" from "Be the Orchestra", the adult beginner course, and word of mouth has brought other members as well. "Any adult who plays a string instrument at the middle school/junior high level is welcome to join us," says Hays. The group practices on Monday evenings.
