Look Mom - I'm blogging!!!

Welcome to my blog.

I'm excited to be able to share some behind-the-scenes insight into our world of orchestra management. It's a wonderful and odd, thrilling and scary business. Many who find their way into it become hooked, while others find it too much. It's not for the faint of heart.

The inspiration for this blog was to offer a peek into what goes into programming a season. Specifically, the Pops Series. The process is one part Gulliver's Travels, one part Star Search, and a dash of Pin The Tail On The Donkey. I'll chronicle some of my travels and the artists I see along the way, but I also want to hear from you. I hope you'll react to what I"m up to and also provide your own thoughts and ideas.

Periodically I may comment on national and local trends or issues facing orchestras and other arts groups. And if you have a question you've always wanted to ask, this can be the place.

So let's have fun exploring this common passion that is the professional symphony orchestra. I look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you at the concerts!

I am so excited that you are doing these show for kids but am saddened that they are on Sundays. When I was a young child in school, two of our all school field trips was to the OKC Philharmonic concerts! We always looked forward to this and would love to see it for our kids. This Sunday, October 2 we cannot attend because of our school fundraiser and my son absolutley LOVES Pirates - this would be great for him to see. Would you consider another show or having this on a weekday so that we can get all of the students 1-8th grade to the concert or at least the primary thru middle school? It would be absolutley awsome!
Thanks,

Therese

I LOVE your shows!

Hello Therese. And thanks for your question.

The Sunday Discovery Series concerts are designed for the family experience. Research has shown that family involvement with music is the best indicator for lifelong participation - either as a musician or as a supporter/attender. Maestro Levine launched this series more than 20 years ago - well ahead of the national orchestra industry. Hats off to him for his vision. I hope you can attend the other two concerts later in the season. They're great fun!

But more to your question, we do offer concerts for schools every year. In fact, the first group of concerts is next week - the mornings of October 4 and 5. I know that we have some space left, so if your son's school can contact Katie@okcphilharmonic.org, we may be able to arrange to get the students in. Most schools bring 3rd-5th grades, depending on the size of the school. We serve between 16,000 and 17,000 students each year.

Hi! I'm new to OKC PHIL. I'm glad to hear about this Sunday Discovery Series concerts. I immediately looked it up and feel a bit disappointed in finding that there are only three such concerts in one year. I have a two and a four year old and I'd love to expose them to symphony music as early as possible. As they are not allowed to the official symphony nights (age 5 and above) (and evenings are not good timing for them anyways), this series sound like the only alternative. Is it possible to have more of such concerts for young children? Or are there other such events that young children are allowed?
